Island of the Blue Dolphins - Tournament of books Have you ever felt alone? Scared? Well you know what Karana felt like. She is Courageous and hopeful. But will Karana survive alone? Hi my name is Heidi and my book is Island of the Blue Dolphins By: Scott O’Dell. The main character in my book is Karana. Karana is a girl with long black wavy hair who is 12 years old and is a first nations person. Left on the island to survive she lives on one hope. The ship will come back. But will it? Island of the Blue Dolphins is about a girl named Karana. There is a island where First nations used to live. The Aleuts who are their enemy came and had a battle. The ghalas-at tribe sailed away and Karana is left behind with her brother Ramo. The wild dogs killed her brother and now she is alone and has to survive by herself. The only hope Karana has was when she jumped from the ship to save her brother the new chief said they would come back so year after year she waits. While she waits she keeps herself alive by building shelters, making weapons, collecting food and fighting the wild dogs. Will the ship come and get her? My favourite part of Island of the Blue Dolphins is she expresses her feelings to her tamed wild dog, Rontu which in her language means Fox eyes. Here is a quote: “It is a beautiful day. I have never seen the ocean so calm and sky looks like a blue shell. How long do you think these days will last?”(page. 101) People can change like in my book the Aleuts killed the Ghalas-at tribe. The remaining people of the tribe left the island and that is why she was left behind. The Aleuts came back after many years and she becomes friends with a Aleut girl named Tutok and the relationship was changed. I also like how it gives a calm feeling. Here is a quote: “The morning was fresh from the rain. The smell of the tide pools was strong. Sweet odors came from the wild grasses in the ravines and from the sand plants on the dunes. I sang as I went down the trail to the beach to the sandpit. I felt that the day was an omen of good fortune. It was a good day to begin my new home.”(page. 72) I recommend Island of the Blue Dolphins to anyone who likes Swiss Family Robinsons, Grade four experienced readers and up. I chose Island of the Blue Dolphins because my mom suggested it to me and said she read many times and loved it. I am not a fan of reading books more than once unless I really liked it so I tried Island of the Blue Dolphins and did it for my presentation. I would categorize Island of the Blue Dolphins in Adventure. You should vote for my book because Breanna’s book Spirit Animals is hard to get into and you feel like you are just reading about someone else's adventure. I had a hard time picturing the scenes because their was not much description. Unlike my book where It was really hard to put my book down. In Island of the Blue Dolphins you feel you are in the adventure with Karana. Island of the Blue dolphins is very descriptive and I can easily picture the scenes in my mind. “Birds were plentiful, too. There were many hummers which can stand still in the air and look like bits of polished stone and have long tongues to sip honey with. There were blue jays, which are very quarrelsome birds, and black-and-white peckers that pecked holes in the yucca stalks and the poes of my roof, even in the whale bones of the fence. Red-winged blackbirds also came flying out of the south, and flocks of crows, and a bird with a yellow body and a scarlet head, which I had never seen before.”(page 112-113) “I thought of many things, but stronger was the wish to be where people lived, to hear their voices and their laughter.”(page. 175)
